PHOENIX -- The Kansas Royals had given Danny Duffy almost no run support over his previous four starts and little all season, so they were anxious give him something, anything against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ten runs on three swings did the trick nicely. Billy Butler had a three-run homer among his four hits, Nori Aoki hit a grand slam and the Royals gave Duffy some rare run support by bashing the Diamondbacks 12-2 on Tuesday night. "Our pitching has picked us up all year and for us to give Duffy some support like that, especially a guy we havent been giving any to, was big for us," said Butler, who had three hits his previous game. The Royals started early, battering Wade Miley (7-8) for 10 runs by the fifth inning. Salvador Perez had the first big blow with a three-run homer in the third inning and Butler added another three-run shot during Kansas Citys eight-run fifth. Aoki capped the big inning with his first career slam, marking the first time the Royals had a grand slam and three-run homer in the same inning. Kansas City had 10 of its 15 hits -- three by Perez -- by the fifth inning and had a season-high in runs, allowing Duffy (6-10) to cruise to his first win since June 30. Not bad for a team thats missing its best hitter (Eric Hosmer) and entered the game with 62 homers in 110 games, by far the fewest in the majors. "You score 10 runs off of three swings of the bat, youll take it," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Im not really (used to it), but Ill take it when I can get it." The Royals have mostly struggled when Duffy has pitched this season, producing 2.34 runs of support, lowest in the majors among pitchers with at least 100 innings. The left-hander had allowed a run or less in 11 of 16 starts, yet was 4-5 in those, including four straight losses. That changed in a big way against the Diamondbacks and Miley. Arizonas left-hander had been sharp over his previous six starts, going 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA, including 6 2-3 scoreless innings his last outing. The Royals hit Miley hard early, starting with Perezs 13th homer in the third inning. Butler added his own three-run shot in the fifth and, after a pair of wild pitches by Miley, Aoki put the capper on the big inning with his first career grand slam on the first pitch by reliever Bo Schultz. Miley allowed nine hits and walked three. "Everything I threw was in the middle of the plate," Miley said. "You cant find success up here when you are living in the middle of the plate." Duffy got off to a rough start, giving up a pair of doubles in the first inning, including one by Mark Trumbo that scored the games first one. The left-hander was sharp after that, allowing three hits and striking out seven in five innings to end a five-start winless streak. "This was not a good night for us all around," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "We had some opportunities and couldnt come through." MILESTONES Royals LF Alex Gordon reached a big milestone in the fifth inning, lining a single for his 1,000th career hit -- all with Kansas City. He became the 10th player in franchise history to reach 1,000 hits and joined Butler, seventh on the list with 1,231. ... Trumbo played his 500th career game. AOKIS HOMER Aoki hit 10 homers as a rookie in 2012 and eight last season, but had yet to clear the fences this season. He finally cleared the wall in the fifth inning, ending a streak that stretched 338 at-bats to Sept. 27, 2013. "I knew it was coming, somewhere down the road," Yost said. "Glad to see it today." TRAINERS ROOM Diamondbacks: OF A.J. Pollock, out since June 1 with a broken right hand, was 0 for 5 in his first game with Triple-A Reno. He was 1 for 3 in two games with Arizonas rookie league team. ON DECK: Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura will start Wednesdays game against Arizona after picking up his eighth win of the season the last time out. He allowed an earned run in seven innings against Minnesota and struck out seven for the second straight start. Laviolette has won nine of the 14 post-season series he has coached with the Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers. He also won the Stanley Cup in 2006 with Carolina and coached the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals in 2010. The Predators announced Tuesday they signed him to a multi-year contract. "Weve taken a big leap in the right direction getting our team back on the path, and that path is toward the playoffs," Poile said at a news conference. The Predators reached the Western Conference semifinals in 2011 and 2012 but missed the playoffs the past two seasons. Laviolette will take over in Nashville once he finishes coaching the United States at the 2014 World Championship. He said in a statement he loves the Predators nucleus starting with defenceman Shea Weber and goaltender Pekka Rinne. "My challenge will be to impart a system that enables our young forwards to thrive and reach their offensive potential," Laviolette said. "Being a perennial Stanley Cup contender requires buy-in, passion and commitment from every player on the roster. I cant wait to get to Nashville and get started on our journey." Poile said hes known Laviolette for years through USA Hockey. Also general manager of the 2014 U.S. Olympic team, Poile named Laviolette one of that teams three coaches. He also interviewed Laviolette for the Predators job along with a couple others he did not name originally planning to hire his new coach in June. Openings in Florida, Carolina, Washington and Vancouver prompted Poile to move quicker to avoid losing Laviolette. Poile said he was very comfortable hiring Laviolette. "Basically in some form, I was interviewing him all year long," Poile said. Laviolette has been a head coach over 12 seasons starting with the New York Islanders between 2001 and 2003, Carolina from 2003-09 and Philadelphia frrom 2009 until October.ddddddddddddHe has 389 wins and 866 career points and six playoff berths, winning nine series. He helped the Islanders end a seven-year post-season drought with back-to-back berths in 2002 and 2003, and the Flyers lost the cup to Chicago in six games in 2010. Laviolette is considered an offensive-minded coach with his teams finishing in the Top 10 in six of his eight full seasons and not lower than 13th in goals scored. That helps fill a major need for the Predators who scored only 216 goals this season when they finished three points out of the final Western Conference playoff berth. Poile said he wanted a coach with a different style of play, and Laviolettes teams play more up-tempo and are more offensive oriented. Thats what Poile wants out of the Predators. The general manager said theyve been working to improve their forwards, including trading Martin Erat in March 2013 for Filip Forsberg and David Legwand to Detroit this March for Calle Jarnkrok. Forward also is likely to be the position the Predators draft with the 11th pick overall in June. Young forwards already on the roster will get a second chance with Laviolette. Mix that with what Poile believes is one of the best defences in the NHL, and he expects the Predators to be back in the playoffs next year. "With his system and different ideas if you will, I think offensively we have a chance to be a lot better under his leadership," Poile said. Forward Matt Cullen helped Laviolette win the Stanley Cup in Carolina and is looking forward to playing for him again. "Hes a great fit for our team and what we need going forward," Cullen said on a conference call. "And I just think a lot of Peter as a coach. Hes a good person, and he just has that real ability to bring out the best in all of his players." The Predators also hired Kevin McCarthy as an assistant coach. He joins assistant coaches Phil Housley and Lane Lambert. They worked with Barry Trotz, the only other coach for this franchise who the Predators announced April 14 that he would not return. ' ' '
