While the Calgary Flames are coming off one of their best offensive performances of the season, the Washington Capitals put forth a defensive effort last time out that left their head coach none too pleased. The Flames try to stay in the win column and hand the Capitals a fifth straight setback as the two clubs clash on Tuesday night in D.C. Calgary opened a five-game road trip on Sunday with a 6-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Rookie Josh Jooris scored twice in the Flames second straight victory, one that moved them to 4-1-2 in their last seven. Jooris, one of six Calgary skaters to have at least two points, is one player being asked to step up with Mason Raymond, Matt Stajan, Mikael Backlund and Joe Colborne all out of the lineup due to injury. Markus Granlund, Curtis Glencross, Lance Bouma and Mark Giordano also scored for the Flames, who returned the favor after losing 2-1 in a shootout to the Canadiens last Tuesday in Calgary. When things are going well we just have to keep it up, said Flames goaltender Jonas Hiller, who had 18 saves. Yes, it would have been nice to get a win against them at home, but its just as good to win on the road. TJ Brodie had three assists for Calgary and Jiri Hudler and Johnny Gaudreau added a pair of helpers each. Hiller is 5-0-1 in his past six games and is expected to start tonight. He is 2-1-1 lifetime versus the Capitals with a 3.33 goals against average and .890 save percentage in five meetings. The Capitals may have the offense to cool off Hiller, but theyll need a better defensive effort than what they gave forth in Sundays 6-5 loss to Arizona. Washington led 3-1 after the first period, but allowed the Coyotes to score five straight goals to take advantage. Arizona scored three times in the third period and Washington has been outscored 8-2 in the final frame during its four-game skid. Sometimes, I get the feeling we want to play just as hard as we need to. And that is not how I operate. Thats not how you win in this league, said Washington coach Barry Trotz. We have good people in that room. Good talent. You are going to go through some rough patches. You dont find out a lot when things are going really smooth. But you find out a lot and grow a lot when things arent going really smooth. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and three assists for his 14th career four-point game. He also tied Peter Bondra for the franchise record with 825 points. Tom Wilson had a goal and an assist and Nicklas Backstrom contributed with three assists. Troy Brouwer scored in a third straight game, Joel Ward and John Carlson added goals, and Justin Peters made only 24 saves. Braden Holtby figures to start in net tonight for Washington. He is 1-1-0 in three meetings with Calgary, posting a 4.71 GAA and .848 save percentage. Washington did secure a 3-1 road win over Calgary on Oct. 25, getting a pair of goals from Ward and 20 saves by Holtby. Kari Ramo started in net for the Flames and made 27 saves as Calgary lost to Washington for the fourth time in the last five meetings. Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw have been exactly what San Antonio needed in this matchup against the Miami Heat, and might be the two biggest reasons why the Spurs are one win away from their fifth NBA championship. The Spurs lead these finals 3-1, and will look to end Miamis reign in Game 5 at home on Sunday night. "If you want to win championships, obviously you need a Big 3," Parker said. "But you need your role players to play great too. And every time we won championships in the past, the Big 3, we played great, but we had great role players. ... If you want to go all the way, you need the whole team to play great." Thats what the Spurs are getting. Parker is leading the Spurs in scoring, Tim Duncan is leading in rebounding and the Western Conference champions are outscoring Miami by 62 points so far with Manu Ginobili on the floor -- so yes, the Big 3 is doing its part. But when the Spurs took control of the series by winning Games 3 and 4 in Miami, Leonard led the charge by averaging 24.5 points on 68 per cent shooting. And Diaw has 23 assists so far in the series, more than anyone else and none probably better than his behind-the-back offering out of the post that set Tiago Splitter up for a dunk in Game 4. Theres already talk that Leonard could be in line to win MVP of the finals. In an absolutely not-shocking development, he wanted no part of that talk. "It feels the same for me as any game going into it," Leonard said of the anticipation level for Game 5. "All Im thinking about is playiing.dddddddddddd Im not worried about what if we win or lose, and we just want to go out and play." Such is the Spurs way. The makeup of a player who perfectly fits into the San Antonio system has remained unchanged for the better part of two decades. He values team play over any individual accolade. He never says too much, particularly about himself. He stays in the moment, avoiding the urge to look ahead or behind. Leonard and Diaw meet all those characteristics. "He really has a high basketball IQ," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Diaw. "I think he raises the level for everyone. At the defensive end, hes pretty heady, not the quickest guy in the world, but really smart. Does his work early and understands whats going on. At the offensive end, he can score inside and out, and he passes the ball really well. Hes a consummate team sort of guy." Diaw is just the third player to have a game with at least nine rebounds and nine assists during these playoffs, with Oklahoma City stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook being the others. For his part, Diaw said hes never cared about scoring. If the team scores, thats good enough for him. "Its just moving the ball, playing with everybody," Diaw said. "There is nobody really just watching. Everybodys involved, and everybody gets the ball at some point. So its been good." Good, indeed. One more win, and these Spurs officially become great. ' ' '
