The Broncos have hired a defensive coach to get the most out of a defense that fueled a championship four years ago. In the last week I’ve seen plenty of talk about the cost it would take to move up to 2, but that seems misguided. Unless it becomes a certainty that the Arizona Cardinals are taking Nick Bosa, John Lynch and the 49ers are likely to sit idle at 2 for a chance at their franchise edge rusher. Unless the Broncos front office works out an “if/then” deal for once Bosa goes (and that’s assuming Kyle Shanahan doesn’t have his eyes on Quinnen Williams or someone else at 2) Denver is unlikely to move up that far.With that ruled out, the Broncos best chances to get ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars appears to be the New York Jets at 3 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 5. Oakland’s probably not helping Denver grab their franchise guy, especially after Gruden spent a week evaluating him. New York just grabbed their guy last year after the same kind of aggressive move that Denver needs to pull. The Jets traded 3 second round picks as well as their 2018 first rounder to move up from 6 to 3. That means they’ll probably demand more to slide from 3 back to 10, but with Darnold in place may be open to doing so.Tampa is the other realistic possibility. Jameis Winston has at least one more season to prove he’s “the guy” and the Bucs need a ton of defensive help. Multiple picks would let Arians and company throw more darts at the board to see what hits. Additionally the cost of moving from 10 to 5 isn’t nearly as high. It will be expensive, but the Broncos need to ensure they get high enough in the draft order that another team can’t surpass them at the last moment. The Giants, Jaguars and Washington loom as QB needy teams likely to pounce on a rookie. That cost is the same reason some are cooling on the possibility.
