PHOENIX -- Yusmeiro Petit rarely pitched so well in his days with the Arizona Diamondbacks. An older, wiser version of the former Arizona right-hander was on the mound against his old team on Sunday, and for the second straight start since he was called up from the minors, Petit was in control. He struck out a career-high 10, Hector Sanchez drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat Arizona 8-2 to take two of three from the Diamondbacks. Hunter Pence homered, doubled and singled, driving in two runs and scoring three times as the Giants improved to 10-5 against Arizona this season. But the story for San Francisco was Petit. "Im not going to say surprised, Im going to say Im happy for him," Pence said. "Hes just gets his work done. Hes done everything the right way. Hes a good guy to have around the clubhouse. Hes positive. He has tremendous command, hes got a couple of off-speed pitches to keep them honest, and its been fun playing behind him." Patrick Corbin (13-5), pitching on an extra two days rest, allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings to fall to 1-4 in his last seven starts. Petit (2-0), who pitched for the Diamondbacks from 2007-09, went six-plus innings, allowing two runs on seven hits in his first career start against Arizona. He also singled in a run, his second career RBI. Petit was making his second start since being called up from Triple-A Fresno. He gave up two runs on six hits in six innings in a 5-3 win at Colorado on Tuesday. "Hes come up here and done all that we could ask for," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Petits previous career high in strikeouts was eight on three occasions, most recently July 29, 2009, while pitching for Arizona against Philadelphia. He said hes a "completely different" pitcher than he was in those days. "Experience," he said with a teammate serving as translator. "Before I wasnt consistent with what I was doing. Now the experience is taking place in what Im showing right now." Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said Petit "is a little bit more mature" than he was in his days with the Diamondbacks. "He had a good plan today and he hit his spots," Gibson said. "When you hit your spots with that much regularity it makes it tough." San Francisco won its fourth consecutive series over the Diamondbacks overall and fifth series in a row in Arizona. The Diamondbacks last won a series at home against the Giants April 6-8, 2012. The extra rest didnt do much good for Corbin. In his last two outings, the young left-hander has given up 14 runs, 13 earned, on 16 hits. "I felt all right," Corbin said. "I just wasnt really locating anything and left some pitches up." San Francisco scored three times with two outs in the fourth inning. Buster Posey led off with a single, then Pence doubled to put runners at second and third. Pablo Sandoval flew out to right and Brett Pill grounded out to third and it looked as if Corbin might escape. But Sanchez doubled to left-centre to bring both runners home and make it 3-1. Gregor Blancos infield single put runners at first and third, then Petits single to right put the Giants up 4-1. It was Petits fourth career hit in 69 at-bats. Pences opposite-field home run on Corbins full-count pitch with two outs in the fifth boosted the lead to 5-1. Arizona scored first in the opening inning when Adam Eaton singled and scored from first on Martin Prados two-out double. San Francisco tied it in the second. Pence drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on Sandovals single and scored on Sanchezs ground out to short. Petit left after giving up a leadoff single to A.J. Pollock in the seventh. Left-hander Jose Mijares got Gerardo Parra to fly out, then struck out pinch-hitter Tony Campana. Willie Bloomquist singled to put runners at first and second, then Eatons RBI single cut the lead to 5-2. Right-hander Santiago Casilla relieved Mijares and, on the first pitch, Paul Goldschmidt flew out to centre to end the inning. Posey doubled in two runs off and Pence had an RBI single off Heath Bell in the ninth. NOTES: The Giants activated 2B Tony Abreu off the 15-day DL. The weekend at Oriole Park has been less kind, with three players suffering varying degrees of injury. NEW YORK -- New Yorks once faint, nearly unrealistic playoff hopes have become a real possibility. The Knicks intend to seize the opportunity and run with it. "We know what we want," Carmelo Anthony said. J.R. Smith had 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Anthony added 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knicks beat the city rival Brooklyn Nets 110-81 Wednesday night to move percentage points ahead of Atlanta for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Knicks were 21-40 on March 3 after a seven-game skid and are still just 33-43. But they know that record gets wiped away if they can finish off this turnaround. "We want to get there. Thats the goal," Anthony said. "Despite this emotional season, this up-and-down season, I think it would be a big deal to get in that spot." Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 17 points a game after spraining his right ankle to help the Knicks win for the 12th time in 15 games, dominating a team that had the best record in the Eastern Conference since the new year. New York won its third straight. The Knicks made 24 of 36 shots in taking a 63-38 halftime lead in front of new president Phil Jackson, who wouldnt have much to fix if they looked like this more often. They finished at a season-high 60 per cent and outrebounded Brooklyn 41-23. "Our guys are hungry," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "Normally anybody that comes off the West Coast, when youve been out there for a while, that game coming back is normally a tough game, but our guys came out with energy and came out ready to play." Joe Johnson scored 16 points for the Nets, who had won three straight. A night after clinching a playoff berth by beating Houston, they were out of the game by the opening minutes of the second quarter. "It was very frustrating the way we got blown out," Johnson said. "For whatever reason, we had a few guys fighting and a few guys who wasnt fighting. If were not all on the same page, you get a lopsided score like that." In a game that both clubs need for different reasons, the Knicks were the more desperate team, taking a 2-1 lead in the season series. None of the games has been close, but botth have bigger concerns than city bragging rights, anyway.dddddddddddd The Knicks have almost no margin for error in a final seven-game stretch against playoff-bound opponents. They had no problem with the first one and will face the Nets one more time on April 15 on the second-to-last night of the season. Brooklyn is hoping for home-court advantage in the first round, but fell 2 1/2 games behind Toronto and Chicago for a spot. The Nets led 20-19 late in the first quarter, but Anthony had two baskets, Smith made a 3-pointer and found Hardaway for another at the buzzer as the Knicks scored the final 10 points for a 29-20 lead. Hardaway made another 3 to open the second and Iman Shumpert scored to make it a 15-0 run and give the Knicks a 34-20 advantage. Anthony had the first six points of an 8-0 burst that pushed it to 58-34 with 1:36 remaining in the half, and it was 63-38 at the break. The Nets were angry with the officiating, with Johnson picking up a technical foul at halftime and coach Jason Kidds assistants stepped in front of him as he tried to yell toward the refs. Brooklyn got within 14 with 2 minutes left in the third, but the Knicks, unveiling a small lineup that had Anthony as its centre, stretched their lead to 82-61 heading to the fourth. "They were the better team tonight," Kidd said. "Lose by one, lose by 100, its just a loss. We move on." Knicks guard Raymond Felton went the locker room early in the third quarter with bruised ribs and back after a hard landing while trying to grab an offensive rebound, but was able to return early in the fourth.
