BOSTON - The Boston Bruins were sorry to see January come to an end.The Bruins closed out a stellar run through the month with a 3-1 win over Los Angeles on Saturday, answering a strong push from the Kings in the third period with two late goals to finish off the defending Stanley Cup champions.Chris Kelly broke a 1-all tie with 5:27 left in the third period and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter for his second goal of the game as the Bruins finished the month with a record of 8-1-3.Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said the atmosphere felt a little more like spring than a regular-season game on a frigid Boston winter night. It was just really two hard-working teams battling for the win, said Chara, who had an assist on Marchands goal that broke the scoreless tie late in the second period. There was not much room to do a lot. It was a really tight checking game and really those goals were not highlight-reel goals. It was kind of like a playoff-feel goals.Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the Bruins as he and Los Angeles Jonathan Quick exchanged tough saves throughout the night.Quick also finished with 30 saves, but took the loss as the Kings lost yet another close one. Los Angeles fell to 1-2-2 in its last five games, all of which were decided by two goals or less.We thought we played well again and we didnt bury our chances, said Jordan Nolan, who scored the Kings only goal. I thought it was a good hockey game. They play the same style that we do and they are exciting games to watch for the fans and we like being a part of those. Tonight, they got the better of us.Nolan broke up Rasks shutout bid on a soft wrist shot with seven minutes left in the third. It was his second goal of the season and evened the score at 1-1, but the tie didnt last long.Kelly put Boston back on top 1:33 later when he tipped in Carl Soderbergs shot. The puck was in and out of the net too quickly for the officials to see and wasnt ruled a goal until a video review confirmed it went in.I didnt even know it went in, to be honest. Thats why I was trying to get the rebound, Kelly said. I actually heard a linesman say to the ref I think that went in, so the replay works in your favour sometimes. The Kings continued to throw shots at Rask, but he didnt let anything past him after Nolans goal.Hes been great. Weve talked about it for a long time and you know this last month hes been on fire, Boston coach Claude Julien said. He made some huge saves at some opportune times, but so did the other guy at the other end. So you know it was a good goaltender duel tonight and a good battle overall from two teams.Marchand broke the scoreless tie on a goal with 3:40 left in the second period, then added his 15th of the season with 17 seconds left to play. Marchand directed a backhand toward the empty net and the puck slowly drifted in, just out of Jeff Carters reach as he raced to try to stop it.I didnt mean to shoot it that far at first, Marchand said. I just wanted to chip it and kind of go after it.Marchand beat Quick on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line on a drop pass from Zdeno Chara. It was Bostons first goal against the Kings since Marchand scored 8:53 into the third period of a game on Jan. 20, 2014.Tyler Toffoli just missed tying it about 2:20 into the third period on a shot that bounced hard off the post with a loud clang. It was one of just a few shots for Los Angeles that Rask didnt get a piece of as he withstood the Kings pressure in the third period.Marchand actually celebrated three goals, but only two counted. He was a second or two late on a wrist shot that beat Quick at the end of the first period. Replays showed the puck didnt cross the goal line until after time had expired and it remained scoreless heading into the second.NOTES: Los Angeles opened a five-game Eastern Conference road trip, which will include a stop at the White House on Monday while the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings are in town to play the Capitals on Monday night. ... After a tough 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre, Therrien came to the defence of a Montreal team that couldnt generate much offence during the game. "Weve played a lot of hockey in less than three weeks," said Therrien. "This team is drained. Theyre empty." The Canadiens have played 11 games in the last 19 days, including a 1-0 overtime victory against the Islanders in New York on Saturday night. The team touched down at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal in the wee hours Sunday, delayed by a snowstorm, and even scratched their morning practice. Therrien didnt blame the loss on a lack of effort or passion, but simply on fatigue. "The lemon is squeezed of all its juice," said Therrien. "When physically, youre tired, the execution is not quite there, and you make bad decisions. They go hand in hand. "Im not blaming (the players). I see what were asking of them. Very demanding. Theyre athletes, theyre human beings. They gave what they could in the circumstances. I know what they could give, and they gave it." The Canadiens started slowly, recording their first shot on net seven minutes into the first period, and were sluggish for most of the game. After two periods, the Panthers led 2-0 and were outshooting the home side 20-12. Montreal came into the third with a burst of energy. With the Habs pressing on the power play, its first of three in the final 20 minutes, Alex Galchenyuk reduced the deficit at 2:28 after banging home captain Brian Giontas rebound from inside the goaltenders crease. But with Floridas Mike Weaver and Scottie Upshall in the penalty box later in the period, the Canadiens couldnt gain control of the game despite playing 35 seconds of 5-on-3 hockey. Galchenyuk had a golden chance in front of the net to tie the game, but fanned on the bouuncing puck.dddddddddddd "We had an opportunity to win the game, and we wanted to win the game," said P.K. Subban, who registered the only shot on the Habs back-to-back power plays. "We have to capitalize on our opportunities." Panthers goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 17 saves, six of which came in the third period, to earn his second victory of the year. He got the nod in net in place of Tim Thomas, whos sidelined with a groin injury. "Our penalty killing came up big for us," said Clemmensen, looking back on the 5-on-3. "Our guys were diving in front, getting sticks up there, deflecting passes, being in a good position. It was great. Thats how we win games." Peter Budaj got the start in net for the Canadiens, his first of the season at home. He stopped 23-of-25 shots. The Panthers outshot the Canadiens 14-8 in the first period, but neither team came close to breaking the deadlock. Jesse Winchester got the Panthers on the board at 4:44 of the second, beating Budaj to his right with a one-timer off the post and in. Tomas Kopecky started the play, drawing both Montreal defencemen behind the net before feeding the puck to a wide open Winchester, who made no mistake from close range for his fifth goal of the year. Nick Bjugstad doubled the Panthers lead at 7:11, finishing off Floridas 3-on-2 rush by firing a wrist shot under Budajs glove. Florida (12-17-5) extended its win streak to three games.
