LONDON - The IOC will not reopen the bidding process for the 2022 Winter Olympics, even though only two cities are left in the troubled race following Oslos withdrawal. The IOC is sticking to its commitments, IOC President Thomas Bach told The Associated Press on Thursday. We have issued the invitation for bidding. There is a clear and transparent procedure. We will follow this procedure with two candidates.Oslo became the fourth city to drop out of the bidding on Wednesday after the Norwegian government declined to provide financial support, citing concerns over the cost of hosting the games. The move leaves Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, as the only two remaining candidates. Neither are established winter sports countries, and both are targets of human rights critics. We are in the middle of a procedure, Bach said. We cannot and we do not want to change the regulations in the middle of the race, given the fact that we still have two very interesting candidatures with a very diverse approach. The IOC will select the 2022 host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Beijing, which staged the 2008 Olympics, is seeking to become the first city to host both summer and winter games. Almaty, located in Central Asia, hosted the 2011 Winter Asian Games and will stage the 2017 Winter University Games.Stockholm; Krakow, Poland; and Lviv, Ukraine, withdrew their 2022 bids in recent months. Before that, potentially strong bids from St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany, were rejected by voters in referendums.Oslo was forced to pull out after the ruling Conservative party rejected financial guarantees for the games. The junior partner in the minority coalition voted against the bid four months ago, and polls have shown that more than 50 per cent of Norwegians are opposed. For me the decision was no surprise at all, Bach said by telephone from Lausanne, Switzerland. This was clearly a political decision. You have a minority coalition government. Its very rare that a minority coalition government is taking the risk of losing or giving up its coalition for the sake of a project which shows its benefits only after the next election day.On Wednesday, in an unusually strongly-worded statement, IOC executive director Christophe Dubi said Norways decision to pull out was based on half-truths and factual inaccuracies. He blamed the bid team for failing to send a senior leader or government official to a meeting about the requirements and costs.Bach told the AP that separate meetings with Oslo and the two other bid teams took place on Tuesday in Lausanne, a day before the Norwegian government debate.Contrary to prior announcements, no government representative was in this meeting, Bach said. Everybody can draw his own conclusions.Bach said Norway is missing out on $880 million in sponsorship and television revenues that the IOC will be providing to the 2022 organizers, a 25-per cent increase over the sum Vancouver received for the 2010 Olympics. All this shows that this was very much a political decision, Bach said. This why we are feeling so sorry for sport in Norway and the athletes.Bach acknowledged that the Winter Games are facing a difficult period. The number of candidates for winter is already very limited by geography, he said. Also we cant forget that this is a challenging time with regard to the world economy. But Bach insisted the image and brand of the Olympics remains strong, citing the recent signing of long-term commercial agreements, including NBCs record $7.75 billion deal for U.S. rights through 2032.The Olympic Games are and will be the premium product, he said. Nobody would enter into such kind of agreements if there would be a doubt on the image. Many cities have been scared off by the record $51 billion price tag associated with the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. While most of that money went to long-term regeneration and infrastructure projects, not the cost of running the games, cities remain wary of the expense. We have to communicate, communicate, communicate about the two different budgets, Bach said. We have to see how we can reduce the costs of the management of the games and the cost of bidding for the games.Oslos exit ensures the Olympics will be going to Asia for a third consecutive time, following the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Normally, the IOC prefers to rotate the games among continents. You look into economy or sports, its always the same, everywhere the same, Bach said. Asia is on the rise.___Follow Stephen Wilson on Twitter: http://twitter.com/stevewilsonap Cheap College Jerseys 2020 . On paper, it looks a little like Andre the Giant taking on a midget wrestler. Chile applied pressure in midfield right from the beginning, challenging aggressively and continually surging forward. Eduardo Vargas beat the offside trap and fired home a stinging shot for Chiles opening goal in the fifth minute.NEWARK, N.J. -- Cory Schneider has played in so many low-scoring games this season that his coach compared him to a pitcher who needs a shutout to win. "We dont give him a lot of run support and I think hes starting to get used to that," New Jersey Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "Hes figured it out that he has to pitch a shutout." Schneider made 26 saves while "pitching" his third shutout of the season and Michael Ryder scored his fourth goal in five games to lead the Devils past the Dallas Stars 1-0 on Thursday night. Schneider came up with his biggest save in the closing seconds when Tyler Seguin of the Stars put one on net, but he turned it away to clinch the game. "Even with 8 seconds left, they can still come up the ice and make something happen," Schneider said. "Fortunately, I was able to stick that one away and it didnt hit my guy and go in. Winning is always better, no matter how it happens, 5-4 or 1-0." Schneider earned his first victory since Dec. 28 against the New York Islanders. Schneiders previous shutout was also a 1-0 victory against Buffalo on Nov. 30. He also blanked the Rangers in October. Ryder, who scored 35 goals three seasons ago while playing for the Stars, netted his team-leading 15th on a pass from Travis Zajac. "I went through a little stretch there where the puck wasnt going in and I just stuck with it," Ryder said. "If you keep shooting, eventually youll find the back of the net. Its going in for me now." Despite stellar goaltending by Kari Lehtonen, who made 33 saves, Dallas dropped its fourth straight. "I think that is the problem when you are losing a lot," Lehtonen said. "You are not consistently playing well. We need to keep working. During a season, there are tough times and really good times. Our job is to cut this as short as possible and start playing well again." Ryder connected at 8:17 of the second period. Ryane Clowe sent the puck behind the net and Zajac held on until he could slip it to Ryder for his shot from the edge of the right circle that beat Lehtonen to his stick side. "One-nothing games are games that goalies want," Lehtonen said. "I wish wee would have been the one with the one goal at the end.dddddddddddd It was a tight game and their goalie played great. Thats how it goes." Ryder nearly struck again at the 10:36 mark of the second when he intercepted a pass and skated in for an uncontested shot that Lehtonen saved. Dallas made a bid to tie the game when Ryan Garbutt took a shot that hit Schneiders mask. Soon after, Stephen Gionta was charged with a double-minor for hitting Jamie Benn in the face with his stick. The Devils killed the four-minute power-play to keep its 1-0 lead entering the third. "That was critical," DeBoer said of killing the four-minute power play. The Stars didnt get their first shot until 10:40 in the first period. That drought included a two-minute power play. The Devils held a 10-8 shots edge in the period. Ryders shot from between the circles was thwarted by a nice reaction save by Lehtonen midway through the first. Schneider made three saves in rapid succession to deny the Stars in the first period. Tyler Seguin skated down the left wing before trying to beat Schneider with a high shot. Seguin got a second chance on the rebound before Rich Peverley took his shot from in close that Schneider blocked. "There wasnt one save that stood out, but that flurry of shots there was when I had to be on my toes," Schneider said. Seguin, Dallas 21-goal scorer had the toughest night with six of his shots denied by Schneider. "Its a big goose egg up there," Seguin said. "I am pretty much a guy who needs to produce. Im not satisfied. In the third period, we showed some desperation. We need to find a way to get it for a full 60. We are wanting to win, but we are not hating to lose." NOTES: Zajac missed Wednesdays practice because his wife gave birth to his daughter. DeBoer noted that Zajac looked energized. "His wife should give birth every week," the coach said. "He looked great." . DeBoer said he was "leaning toward" giving Schneider a second straight start against Florida on Saturday because of the shutout. The Devils activated D Adam Larsson, who has not played since Nov. 23, from IR and assigned him to their AHL Albany affiliate. ' ' 'elphia on Thursday, with Martin Brodeur posting a 22-save shutout -- the 122nd of his career.dddddddddddd. New Jersey had lost its two previous games, both shutouts. "Im disappointed we didnt capitalize on our chances," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer. "We got a bounce there at the end to get a point. We had enough chances to win the game. We didnt finish enough." The Leafs power play, which came into the game fifth in the league, had failed on four previous man-advantage opportunities in the game prior to the Kessel goal. And the Leafs star had been guilty of several giveaways. The 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame Game, which drew a crowd of 19,377 that included Prime Minister Stephen Harper, featured pre-game appearances by former Devils Scott Niedermayer and Brendan Shanahan as well as Chris Chelios and Geraldine Heaney. The late Fred Shero will also be inducted as part of the class of 2013 on Monday. With centres Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland both injured, van Riemsdyk shifted from wing to centre Joffrey Lupul and Kessel on Torontos top line. Van Riemsdyk, whose last duty at centre was at the University of New Hampshire, failed to get a shot on net but his linemates combined for 12 of Torontos 28 on the night. At times the line overelaborated, especially with the Devils in the penalty box. But it paid dividends when it counted. Bernier, who stopped 41 of 43 shots in Calgary last time out, had to be sharp to keep the Leafs in it as Toronto was outshot 35-28 -- the 13th straight game and 14th in 16 this season that the opposition has outshot the Leafs. Former Devil David Clarkson almost scored on the Leafs first shot, cruising in from the slot while protecting the puck from a New Jersey defenceman. His shot got past Schneider but a Devil poked it away before it could trickle over the line. Toronto had several glorious chances to go ahead on a power play late in the first period that started with a four-minute high-sticking penalty to New Jerseys Mattias Tedenby and turned into a 44-second five-on-three when Peter Harrold was called for tripping. The Leafs came very close but could not take advantage. Clarkson, meanwhile, renewed acquaintances by trading hacks with defenceman Marek Zidlicky after a stoppage. Toronto had a sluggish start to the second period with an overly elaborate Kessel continuing to give the puck away. Bernier had to be sharp on several occasions as Toronto, after outshooting the Devils 8-7 in the first period, was outshot 15-8 in the second. Devils forward Stephen Gionta was helped off the ice in the second period after sliding awkwardly into the boards. Hard-nosed Toronto forward Colton Orr, who missed the morning skate in what was deemed a "maintenance morning," did not play. Instead the Leafs dressed seven defenceman with Mark Fraser returning from injury. ' ' 'ater. Still, authorities insist they are making progress with the cleanup, saying Guanabara Bay will be clean in time for the games. ' ' 'le Saturday, but he never looked reckless or out of control. "It was a good start," he said. "You have to start somewhere and set a foundation. I got my feet wet, got my first preseason game under my belt." Manziel went 7 of 11 for 63 yards, completing one more pass than starting quarterback Brian Hoyer. Manziel also ran for 27 yards on six carries. Hoyer went 6 of 14 for 92 yards. Coach Mike Pettine said no decision has been made about who will start Clevelands next preseason game. "They both did some things more suited to their skill set," Pettine said. "I think Brian was high on a couple throws. I think he would want those back, and he threw a couple other nice balls in there. Then I thought Johnny did some nice things from the pocket, and when he got out, he created a little bit as well." Matthew Stafford led the Lions to a field goal on his only drive of the game. Star receiver Calvin Johnson didnt play. "Were very multiple in this offence. We have a lot of different looks and a lot of different plays that we can show the opposing defence," Stafford said. "You didnt see a lot of that tonight, because we barely gameplanned for this game at all, so there werent a lot of the things that we will have in the regular season." Cleveland receiver Nate Burleson, who played in Detroit the last four seasons, also sat out this game. Detroits Kellen Moore threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Corey Fuller with 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Giorgio Tavecchio made the long extra point to give the Lions the one-point win. There was a buzz surrounding this preseason game because of Manziels debut, and the former Heisman Trophy winner took the field with 7:32 remaining in the first half, drawing a few cheers but also plenty of boos from the Detroit crowd. Amid a fair number of camera flashes, Manziel took the snap and immediately completed a 6-yard pass toward the left sideline to Anthony Armstrong. But the Lions stuffed the Cleveland quarterback on what looked like a read option on third down, ending that drive. Billy Cundiff gave Cleveland a 9-6 lead with a 41-yard field goal early in the third quarter. On his next drive, Manziel dropped back on third-and-8, then took off up the middle, finding plenty of open space for a 16-yard run that was the longest by a Cleveland player on the night. "I was coming back across my progression to throw, and it kind of just parted for me. I needed to make a quick decision," Manziel said. "Luckily I got past the first wave of defensive linemen." Manziel later outran the Lions to the sideline to pick up a first down on fourth-and-1, but the drive ended when Dion Lewis fumbled inside the Detroit 30. Cundiff kicked four field goals for the Browns, and rookie Nate Freese made two for the Lions. Detroit was playing its first preseason game under new coach Jim Caldwell, and the offence did little to impress with Stafford barely playing. Backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky went 12 of 23 for 89 yards. Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon played while awaiting word from the NFL on his appeal of a possible suspension for violating the leagues substance-abuse policy. He caught two passes for 32 yards. Rookie tight end Eric Ebron, Detroits first-round draft pick, played after missing some practice time during the week with an injury. He caught one pass. Once again, Montreal dominated this stretch of the match but the score line within it failed to show that. THE NEGATIVES: Both Dallas and Montreal faded badly last season after starting well so it is difficult to know just how good Dallas are this season but they certainly caused Montreals back four some problems. The left side of Brovsky and Nyassi defensively were often exposed and Klopas had to put Miller there late in the game, bringing on Calum Mallace to play right back. THE STAR MAN: For Dallas, it was, unquestionably, Diaz although Castillo had a very good game. Mapp was Montreals best player and his pace and ball control caused Dallas issues throughout. It was no coincidence that both Castillo and Mapp played on the same flank, allowing each other to attack the full back in one-on-one situations. His 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 success over Andy Murray allowed him to claim his 12th major title and join Don Budge, in 1938, and Rod Laver, in 1962 and 1969, as the only players to simultaneously possess the French Open, Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon trophies. He will now attempt to become only the third man to sweep a calendar Grand Slam and the first since Laver in 1969, with victory at the All England Club his next achievable target before the final major of the year at Flushing Meadows in New York.
