Jamie Carragher believes John Terry deserved a better send off from Chelsea, should the captain not return next season. Terry was suspended for Chelseas 1-1 draw with Leicester on Sunday, but took to the pitch after the game at Stamford Bridge to speak to the home fans and reiterate his desire to stay.Terry is out of contract in the summer and although the club have offered him a one-year deal, he is yet to sign, saying on Friday that he is mulling over the decision. And Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports 1 HD, claimed a man of the Chelsea captains stature at the club deserved more. Terry applauds the fans at Stamford Bridge Hes been an integral part of what Chelsea have done over the last 10 years or so, the success theyve had and the trophies theyve won, he said. The one criticism youd have of the club at times, plenty of times, is theyve lacked a little bit of class in different situations. To have a figure like [Terry] and the way its been played out over the last few months, with arguably Chelseas greatest ever player, to be left hanging there like that. It doesnt seem like a send off to me the way it should have been done and the way it should have been handled by the club.To come out with a statement three or four days ago that theyd offered him a contract, it felt to me that they were backing him into a corner when it should be something they do together, whatever that may be. Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring for Chelsea from the penalty spot However, Thierry Henry believes Terrys emotional address to the fans suggested that the captain wont be returning to Stamford Bridge next season. He said: It was a bit weird for me, because I thought it was just like an end-of-season captain talk, and then when he started to be emotional and cry, why would you do that if youre sure of coming back?So if youre not coming back, is that a proper signing off for the man? I dont think it is. I said so many times I think he should stay. Whether he is going to start or not is up to the next manager, but I think he should be back. Because of his tears it looked like hes not coming back, and I think it will be a mistake if he doesnt. Danny Drinkwater (centre) then equalised for Leicester While Graeme Souness believes the lack of respect shown to Terry may lead Chelsea down a dangerous path.I think Chelsea have to be careful, said Souness. Terry will be highly regarded in that dressing room, and there will be players in there thinking: when its my time they might deal with me in the exact same way. What loyalty should I show to this football club if they are going to keep me dangling and not show any great respect? If you cant show respect and dignity to someone [like Terry], arguably the best player Chelsea have ever had, if you cant do the right thing thing by someone of that status, I think its a dangerous road youre going down. Compared to what hes gone through in recent weeks, that seemed like a breeze. Speaking to The Associated Press on Friday at an NBA Cares event, Silver said hes thrilled that the leagues attention can be on the championship series between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs -- and not, as it was for so much of the post-season, on the off-the-court matters involving the banishment of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and now the looming sale of that franchise. "No question," Silver said. "In fairness to all the players and the teams, they worked so hard to get to this moment and a hot building is part of the competition in essence. And all those other things that weve been talking about the last several weeks are not." Posing for photos with Spurs players, coach Gregg Popovich, general manger R.C. Buford and others, Silver was all smiles when the ceremonial red ribbon was cut at the leagues latest "Learn & Play Center" at a San Antonio elementary school. Its the 897th time that the league has been involved with opening a facility like that, and another similar event will be held in Miami when the series shifts there nnext week.dddddddddddd Silver made no prediction, other than saying he thinks the Heat-Spurs matchup could be a long series. He also said he was satisfied that the air conditioning issues that overshadowed Game 1 have been cleared up and will not affect play when the series resumes in San Antonio on Sunday night. "We learn something new all the time," Silver said. "The league checklist continues to get longer, the things that we need to ensure are functioning properly before games." The Sterling matter was Silvers first true test since taking over for David Stern as commissioner, and many players raved about his response, both in terms of message and swiftness. Silver barred Sterling for life after the longtime owner acknowledged making racist comments on tape, plus fined him $2.5 million. Now, the Sterling matter looks to be essentially over. The Clippers are poised to be sold to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion, and Sterlings attorney said earlier this week that issues between Sterling and the NBA will be resolved without need for a lawsuit -- a decision that basically clears the biggest hurdle that would have precluded a sale. "Im pleased and proud that the attention is on the greatest basketball in the world," Silver said. ' ' 'er Dallas at Pepsi Center. Cheap Air Max 97 All Gold China . Darcy Kuemper, Minnesota (5): He was calm, poised, and looked comfortable all game. The most wanted rule-breaker in America today is a New England Patriots ball boy.So whether you think Deflategate is a big deal or not, consider this: If the allegations are true, the fall guy wont be the quarterback married to a supermodel or the multimillionaire coach.Just like the last time the Patriots were caught cheating, a more expendable member of the family will take the blame.Last time, that was Matt Walsh, the only guy fired after Spygate, when the Patriots videotaped other teams coaches to steal hand signals. Coach Bill Belichick said he interpreted the rules wrongly, claimed he couldnt pick video staffer Walsh out of a lineup, paid his fine and continued coaching as if nothing had happened. Now, the Patriots are accused of deflating footballs to make them easier to throw and catch. Once again, the organization has gone hush-hush from top to bottom, including how the footballs are handled. But somewhere, locked inside a janitors closet somewhere deep in the bowels of Gillette Stadium, theres probably another young staffer waiting to be sacrificed. Hes the ball boy the Patriots are sure to single out as the mastermind behind it all. You can imagine him, texting his parents.Wont see you for dinner tonight — or maybe ever. We got caught. Somebodys got to take the fall. Can you tell Dad and write a note to school and explain I wont be back?He probably thought catching passes from Tom Brady would be all fun and games. But when theres trouble, the Patriots circle the wagons. Ball boys dont get invited inside. The best he can hope for at this point is a new identity.Think about it: Where else have you seen a bunch of guys with lots of rings kissing the boss and each other as much as the Patriots do? Like the Corleones, its just business, from owner Robert Kraft on down.Ball boys are expendable, and when the Patriots blame one — as Southern Cal did when the Trojans were caught doing the same thing in 2012 — take it with an industrial-sized dose of salt.Would a ball boy deflate balls illegaally after they were approved by the referees without asking Belichick or Brady for permission?Well, Brady apparently likes his footballs on the soft side, particularly in rainy conditions like those from Sundays AFC title game 45-7 victory over the Colts.dddddddddddd So if the reports are correct, and if the NFL found 11 of the 12 Patriots footballs were under-inflated, the only thing Belichick would be mad about — at least at first — is how the kid got that 12th ball wrong.Belichick and Brady likely were careful enough never to ask anyone directly to take air out of balls. Maybe they learned about buffers from the Corleones, too. Maybe that wish was relayed through nothing more damning than winks and nods. But plausible deniability wont fly in in this case. They knew the rules, and if opponents thought the footballs they were intercepting seemed flat, what are the chances the Patriots didnt?Never fear. Now that the NFLs crack security team is on the case, the mystery will be solved any day now. Those guys, after all, never get anything wrong.Remember how quickly they found the Ray Rice videotape? Or how they took care of bounty accusations in New Orleans without a hiccup?OK, so the game was over Sunday, and they still havent finished examining 12 footballs. But now Commissioner Roger Goodell is on the case, and hes known for getting rid of a crisis quickly and efficiently, just as he has handled every crisis this season.Or not.Now imagine the ball boys mother promising to go all the way up the food chain if necessary to get her son — whom well call Dave — out of trouble. But first, David, tell me where your baby pictures are. One of the guys from the news trucks parked on the lawn is asking.Thats the last thing, mom. Dont call me David anymore. My new name is Drew.Drew.Drew Bledsoe. Coach Belichick told me nobody would remember that name.___Jim Litke is a national sports columnist for The Associated Press. Write to him at jlitke@ap.org and follow him at Twitter.com/JimLitke. ' ' 'ut the struggles by Veras caused manager Jim Leyland to go to his closer far earlier than he would have liked, and Benoit came on with one out in the eighth to try for a rare five-out save. "I dont even consider that a blown save because youre asking him to do an awful lot," Leyland said. "Hes been absolutely fantastic. Hes a very, very outstanding pitcher." After three straight underwhelming outings by his lofty standards, Verlander was back to his untouchable self against the overmatched Twins. With his curveball bending and his slider biting as well as they ever have, Verlander struck out the side in the second and third -- and the whiffs kept coming. "He looked like his old self," Dozier said. "His breaking ball was really moving and he was punching guys out." Five times Verlander got the Twins looking for strike three, four of them with wicked curveballs that froze the hitters. One of them buckled Chris Parmelees knees for his 10th strikeout of the game in the fourth inning. Verlander topped 200 strikeouts for the fifth straight year. "I think I had the best breaking ball Ive had all year," Verlander said. "It was really sharp. It was good. I was able to go to it when I wanted to and throw it for strikes." The right-hander had been tagged for 10 earned runs in his last three starts, a bothersome little skid as the playoffs approach. He also entered the night with a pedestrian 13-12 record and 3.66 ERA that is ordinary by his standards. Maybe an outing against the meagre Twins offence will be enough to get him back in the groove. It was Verlanders third double-digit strikeout game of the season, and first since he fanned 13 Pirates on May 27. Mike Pelfrey gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings for the Twins. "The math doesnt change," Leyland said. "Somehow weve got to win two games." And when something happens to one of us, it happens to all of us. There were some disagreements. Its frustrating," he said. Wilson got seven of his strikeouts on called strikes. "You cant really get a scouting report on the umpires and try to change too much with that. You have to pitch to the hitters," Wilson said. "But it wasnt like the guy had some crazy strike zone. Its just that they were up there looking for pitches that I wasnt throwing, which is why they took the strike three calls." During the singing "God Bless America" in the seventh-inning stretch, Mets manager Terry Collins stood next to Basner at home plate. The two could be seen chatting. The Angels came out swinging and got all three of their homers in a span of seven pitches. Trout drove his fourth of the season into the centre field trees with one out and Pujols hit his third into the left field bullpen.
