SOCHI, Russia -- Age is just a number for Canadian Paralympian Mac Marcoux. The 16-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and guide Robin Femy from Mont Tremblant, Que., captured gold in mens giant slalom at the Sochi Paralympics on Saturday, adding to the two bronze medals he claimed earlier in the Games. Marcoux -- the youngest member of Canadas Paralympic team -- led from start to finish in the mens visually impaired category, dominating in their first of two runs and easily maintaining their lead in the second run. "Its so awesome. Its still setting in. Ive never been so excited after a race," said Marcoux, who won with a two-run combined time of two minutes, 29.62 seconds. "When we crossed the finish line and Rob told me we won, my heart stopped for a second. I crashed into him and just couldnt speak. "All of what has happened at Sochi has exceeded my expectations. I never thought I would win a medal, let alone three." Marcoux and Femy only began skiing together two weeks ago when Marcouxs regular guide and older brother, BJ Marcoux, injured his back. Marcoux and Femy put any doubts of their fledgling partnership to rest early in the Games by winning bronze in downhill and super-G -- even winning their super-G medal with a broken radio headset and no communication. Immediately following Saturdays giant slalom, BJ, who has been by his brothers side all week, ran to Marcoux and the two embraced in a teary hug. "That was a pretty emotional hug. We both broke down a little bit," Marcoux said. "Weve been through everything together since we first started skiing together eight years ago and he has been the most supportive person. This is as much his medal as it is mine." As youngster Marcoux wraps up his first Paralympics with three medals, veteran Chris Williamson, from Toronto, skied in his final Paralympic race on Saturday. Williamson, who won bronze in the mens slalom on Thursday, said he feels like he is passing the torch to Marcoux. "I have a huge mix of emotions here at my last Paralympics, but Im so pleased to have a medal and its pretty clear that visually impaired skiing in Canada is in good hands with Mac!" said Williamson, who finished fifth (2:37.57). Jakub Krako of Slovakia (2:31.66) won the silver medal in the mens visually impaired category, and Russias Valerii Redkozubov earned bronze (2:33.57). Canadas mens sit-skiers didnt fare well in the giant slalom, with Josh Dueck, of Kimberley, B.C., Caleb Brousseau, from Terrace, B.C., and Calgarys Kurt Oatway all not finishing their first runs. Standing skier Kirk Schornstein, of Spruce Grove, Alta. finished 13th (2:40.97). Also at the Paralympics, Canadas national sledge hockey team won bronze, defeating Norway 3-0 in Saturdays bronze medal game at Shayba Arena. The medal is Canadas fourth all-time at the Paralympics; it won gold in 2006 in Torino, Italy, silver in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and bronze in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway, in addition to this years third-place finish. Billy Bridges of Summerside, P.E.I., scored twice to lead the Canadian offence, while Brad Bowden of Orton, Ont., added the other goal as Canada found the back of the net three times in 6:12 early in the second period to break open a scoreless game. Bowden finished with a goal and two assists, and Corbin Watson of Kingsville, Ont., made 10 saves for his third shutout in four games. Canada defeated China 5-4 in the semifinals and then went on to defeat Russia 8-3 in the final match to win the gold medal. In the 4x2.5-kilometre mixed para-Nordic skiing relay, Quebec Citys Sebastien Fortier, Robbi Weldon of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Ottawas Margarita Gorbounova did not finish. In the 4x2.5-kilometre open relay, Chris Klebl of Canmore, Alta., along with Brian McKeever, also from Canmore, and his guides of Erik Carleton, from Canmore, and Whitehorses Graham Nishikawa placed fourth in the open 4x2.5-kilometre relay with a time of 25:51.9. McKeever and company will look to win their third gold medal of the week on Sunday when they hit the start line for the final Nordic race of the 2014 Games. The adoration surely sounded much nicer to Callahan than all the recent trade talk. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues all augmented their free agent classes by signing some European free agents. Numbers Game examines the signings of Petri Kontiola, Leo Komarov, Jiri Sekac and Jori Lehtera. The Maple Leafs Sign: C Petri Kontiola and LW Leo Komarov. Komarov is a familiar face for the Maple Leafs, a 27-year-old winger who was a regular in the Leafs lineup in 2012-2013 before returning to the KHL for a nice payday last season. Komarov had a strong year in the KHL, with Moscow Dynamo, leading the team with 34 points in 52 games, and he played for Finland in both the Olympics and the World Championships. Komarov didnt score much in his first go-round with the Leafs, tallying nine points in 42 games, but there may be more offence to his game than that. Usage would play a big part in whether or not Komarov is ever a factor offensively, but hes being brought back to Toronto more for his attitude than production. Komarov is a relentless pest, who hits a lot and gets under opponents skin. To his credit, he did have solid relative possession stats for the Leafs a couple of years ago. Heres the issue with Komarov, though. If he is capable of contributing offensively, and could fill a top-nine role, then it could justify the four-year, $11.8-million contract he received. If hes the same energetic fourth-liner that he was a couple of years ago -- a distinct possibility -- then hes vastly overpaid. Kontiola is a 29-year-old who was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2004 and played a dozen games with the Blackhawks in 2007-2008, registering five assists and, in that small sample, putting up great possession stats. In two AHL seasons, Kontiola scored 140 points in 159 (regular season plus playoff) games, before heading to the KHL, where he has scored 152 points in 204 games over the past four seasons, the last three with Chelyabinsk Traktor. He had 14 points in 16 games playing for Finland at the Olympics and in the World Championships. With that track record, its possible that Kontiola could contribute some offence for the Maple Leafs but, as a 29-year-old who has barely seen NHL action, he could also be a spare part. The good news is that, signed to a contract for $1.1-million for one season, hes a low-risk investment. If he wins a spot in the lineup and contributes, they can work on an extension; if he doesnt, no big deal. The Canadiens Sign: RW Jiri Sekac. 22-year-old Jiri Sekac was suddenly a hot name on the free agent market this spring after a nice season in the KHL, scoring 11 goals and 288 points in 47 games for Prague Lev, leading his team in points per game (0.dddddddddddd60). As a junior, Sekac played a little in North America, earning zero points in eight games with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL as a 17-year-old before joining Youngstown of the USHL, where he scored 56 points in 96 games. Understandably, with that production, he wasnt considered a hot NHL prospect and went to the KHL, where he scored 21 points in 83 games over two seasons before breaking out last season. Signed for two years, at an entry-level of max of $925,000 per season (plus bonuses), Sekac is rapidly-improving and his potential drew lots of interest throughout the league, but it would be premature -- considering hes had basically one productive scoring season in three years -- to put big expectations on his scoring significantly for Montreal next season. However, if Sekac found a spot in Montreals top nine, maybe he could contribute some offence as a rookie. The Blues Sign: C Jori Lehtera. Lehtera, 26, was a third-round pick of the Blues in 2008 and has played all of 14 (regular season plus playoff games) in North America since, managing three points with Peoria in the 2008-2009 season. Since then, however, Lehtera has been very productive as a playmaking centre. In the past three seasons, playing for Novosibirsk Sibir in the KHL, Lehtera has tallied 39 goals and 118 points in 125 games (with zero goals and eight points in 13 playoff games). The 6-foot-2 centre had 12 points in 10 games at the World Championships this year, as well as four points in six games at the Olympics, not looking the least bit out of place against high-level competition. Coming to North America may require some adjustment, but Lehtera is going to have an opportunity to put up points right out of the game, slated to skate on the Blues second line with Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko on his wings. With quality playing time on a strong team, Lehtera could make an impact right away. 50 points seems a reasonable expectation, but theres upside beyond that if he can make a smooth transition. Lehtera is signed for two years, at a total cost of $5.5-million, a very reasonable price if he ends up fulfilling a top-six role for the Blues. His presence, along with Paul Stastny, allows the Blues to move David Backes and Patrik Berglund to the wing, giving the team outstanding depth up front. ' ' 't his track hosts NASCAR in Fort Worth. "I absolutely think its foolish," said Eddie Gossage, the track president and general manager. "Its a shot fired by Formula One at NASCAR. I cant say I was surprised because Bernie Ecclestone does a lot of foolish things. The thing he unfortunately doesnt recognize is there is an 800-pound gorilla when it comes to major American motorsports. The 800-pound gorilla is NASCAR." Texas Motor Speedway will host NASCARs Texas 500 on Nov. 2, the same day F1 will hold its only race in the U.S. this year. Fort Worth is about a 3-hour drive from Austin. While Gossage thought a stronger stance by the management at Circuit of the Americas would have prevented the scheduling issue, Ecclestone believed it was a non-issue. "Ive also spoken to the people that run the race at COTA and their position is thhat they believe the NASCAR crowd is a different crowd to Formula One, different people, different customers," Ecclestone said.dddddddddddd "At the end of the day, they run a domestic series in America -- we run a world championship." F1 requires considerable logistical planning by the teams, he said. "Weve a small problem they (NASCAR) dont have -- we have six jumbo jets to move around all our equipment, and we have to find the most sensible way to use them to do that," Ecclestone said. "We have to be efficient and bear in mind we may also encounter problems at an airport. "There are issues that can occur, but (Gossage) and other people do not realize these things. The race prior to the one in the U.S. is in Russia, in Sochi. Weve never been before, and we have to get out of there and into Austin. That is probably a lot easier than trying to get into Brazil, and then we have to get out of there (Sao Paulo) to go to Abu Dhabi." Gossage said F1 could have found another weekend to race in the U.S. "Its just not smart," he said. "Theres 52 weeks in the year. But that was the only weekend that Formula One could make it work in Austin, Texas. Give me a break." ' ' 'h attacked the Pacers for three quarters and led 69-68 after Kanters layup to open the fourth quarter. But the deeper into the fourth period they went, the more difficult it was for the Jazz to score. The Pacers disrupted the Jazz offensive sets and when Utah found open looks they misfired down the stretch. "The altitude and my asthma kicked me in the rear to begin with. But I got my second wind and I was trying to be a defensive presence," said Hibbert, who blocked two shots and altered several others. The Pacers tough trip concludes with a back-to-back set against San Antonio on Saturday and Oklahoma City a day later. NOTES: Jazz rookie Trey Burke had a career-high nine assists. . Stephenson, upset with an offensive foul call in the fourth quarter, threw the ball over his shoulder and got a technical foul. . Kanter looked as if he threw Hibbert to the floor in the final two minutes but Hibbert gave a sly smile, indicating he may have helped sell the call. . Though he travelled with the team, Danny Granger has only played five games this season for the Pacers due to a strained calf and is still inactive. ' ' 'f weeks, have the 20th overall pick in the first round, as well as the 37th and 58th picks in the second. St. Louis Cardinals Jerseys . After overcoming a three-goal deficit the Senators forced the game to overtime only to watch it slip away as Seth Jones scored the winner 3:49 into the extra period as the Nashville Predators defeated the Senators 4-3 Monday night. Paul DeJong Cardinals Jersey . - First-timer Chris Harris Jr.BEREA, Ohio - The switch at quarterback for the Browns appears inevitable this week.Johnny Football may be about to take over Clevelands offence. After Brian Hoyer played poorly again in Sundays loss to Indianapolis, Browns coach Mike Pettine seemed to be on the verge of giving rookie Johnny Manziel his first NFL start against Cincinnati.I think its natural to lean the other way, given the results, Pettine said Monday. I still want to make sure we do our due diligence and talk to everybody involved.Pettine was unclear on if he had already decided to make the change and promote Manziel, the high-profile backup who came off the bench and replaced a struggling Hoyer in the fourth quarter two weeks ago in Buffalo. Pettine, who stuck with Hoyer last week because he had the Browns in the playoff mix, said he wants to meet with his coaching staff and general manager Ray Farmer before telling both quarterbacks and announcing who will face the Bengals.Pettine said the offensive problems in Sundays game were deeper than the quarterback, but he called the Browns passing attack sub-standard. Pettine cited dropped passes, receivers running wrong routes and execution as factors but that Hoyer has to play better. There are clearly some throws that he missed, but I think it was also exaggerated by how poorly we were in the pass game around him, Pettine said. We always say it, A quarterback is only as good as his supporting cast. When the guys around him play well, Brian will play well. Its rare that theres a quarterback that can transcend his supporting cast. Were in a results business. Weve lost two in a row. We all know what the numbers have been in the pass game. For us to be successful, they need to improve. The Browns (7-6) blew a 14-point lead in the third quarter, when Hoyer and Clevelands offence failed to get a first down in three straight series.Pettine said Manziel would absolutely be ready if called upon to make his first start. Pettine said nothing is giving him pause to go with the first-round pick.Ill fall back on what Ive said all along. We pull together the circumstances that we have, just like we did last week. Who gives us the best chance to win? Pettine said. Thats the decision we go with. To this point, its been Brian.Pettine was peppered with questions about Manziels dedication and if he worked hard enough to warrant the proomotion.dddddddddddd Since he was drafted, there have been questions about Manziels commitment, with much of the scrutiny stemming from off-the-field behaviour. Manziels penchant for partying and late nights became an issue a few weeks ago when he was involved in a 2:30 a.m. scuffle at a downtown hotel where he lives. On Sunday, Manziel didnt arrive at the stadium until shortly before 11 a.m. for a 1 p.m. kickoff. However, Pettine said Manziel was on time and he had no issues with Manziel attending a Cavaliers game last week when some felt he needed to have his nose in the playbook.Hoyers freefall has been striking. He has thrown just one touchdown pass and eight interceptions in the past four games, a slide that has damaged the Browns hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 2002.Its crazy how fast things change, said Hoyer, who is in the final year of his contract. I feel like four or five weeks ago were talking about contract talks and now were talking about if Im even going to be staying here. Its the furthest thing from my mind right now.Hoyer doesnt think hes playing any differently. He bemoaned missed opportunities against the Colts, especially on long passes in which he overthrew receivers Josh Gordon and Taylor Gabriel. Hoyer, too, says others need to play better around him.Everybodys got to be able to step up and when youre not being perfect you need one guy to step up and make a big play and we didnt have that yesterday, he said. We didnt have one play that just changed it all for us and when youre having a game where theres some inconsistencies, and not everybodys doing their job on every play, you need that one play or that one player to make a play and we didnt have it yesterday.NOTES: Browns S Tashaun Gipson has begun running and believes hell play again this season after missing two games with a strained knee ligament. Gipson was leading the NFL in interceptions when he got hurt. ... Pettine said Hoyers first interception on Sunday was because TE Jordan Cameron ran the wrong route. ... Pettine expects C Ryan Seymour to start for the second straight week. He made his starting debut against the Colts.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL(A previous version of this story incorrectly said the Browns had a 21-point lead. They were ahead 21-7 in the third quarter). ' ' '
